Answering your burning Invisalign questions, with Dr. R. Scott Smith

How exactly does Invisalign work?
Using 3-D computer imaging technology, Invisalign creates a series of custom-made, clear aligners exclusively for your teeth, based on the treatment plan that we specify for you. Each aligner moves teeth incrementally and is worn for about two weeks, then replaced by the next in the series until the final position is achieved.
Will I experience pain during treatment?
Most people experience temporary discomfort for a few days after a new aligner is placed. This feeling of pressure is normal and is a sign that Invisalign is working by sequentially moving your teeth to their final destination.
Can other people see that I'm in treatment?
One of the benefits of Invisalign is that the aligners are clear. You can straighten your teeth without anyone knowing.
Can I smoke during treatment?
We discourage smoking while wearing the aligners as they may become discolored.
Are there any foods I shouldn’t eat while in treatment?
You can eat normally during the entire course of treatment. One of the advantages of Invisalign is that the aligners are removable. Simply take the aligners out before each meal, brush when you're finished eating, then reinsert the aligners afterward.
What about chewing gum?
We recommend removing your aligners for all meals and snacks, as gum and other chewy substances can stick to the aligners.
How often must I wear my aligners?
Aligners should be worn all day, except when eating, brushing, and flossing.
Will my speech be affected by the aligners?
As with any orthodontic treatment, aligners may temporarily affect your speech. If this does happen, your tongue will adjust within a day or two and your speech should return to normal.
How do I clean my aligners?
The best way to clean your aligners is by brushing and rinsing them in lukewarm water.
How often must I visit the office during treatment?
For most patients, visits every 4-6 weeks are frequent enough for us to determine that your treatment is progressing properly. We will provide you with a specific schedule that supports your individual treatment plan.
If you have additional questions about the Invisalign treatment, please give our office a call.

Happy Thanksgiving from R Scott Smith Orthodontics!
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzrlMTHVn-VMmHUeRQvD1-qUK98GaDzg3-RHwsTn2N5UaXQGIhYQr6qWOTpm7mK0HSy8gJp-V5w-tI04uEv5y1Ks0bIjQKvWcTl5JkVf4gZhLNlmScTx3cLBMLtlbQxqEqMf2K2vBaXjk/s320/thanksgiving+dishes.jpg)
Dr. R. Scott Smith and our team at R Scott Smith Orthodontics would like to wish you a safe and happy Thanksgiving. It's a big food holiday, so be careful what you eat with those braces! If you have any stories or pictures to share with us, we'd encourage you to post them on our Facebook page.

Ask Dr. Smith: "I just got my braces. Now what?"
We love when patients ask us that question! Now that you’re wearing braces, it’s just as important to maintain a good oral hygiene regimen as you did before prior to your orthodontic treatment.
Braces are known to trap food particles and make it difficult to brush or remove plaque, which is why Dr. R. Scott Smith and our team at R Scott Smith Orthodontics recommend that you brush and floss after every meal. We also encourage you to use a proxabrush to help with the smaller areas where your toothbrush doesn’t reach. We encourage the use of fluoride rinse as well; just ask us for a recommendation!
When your braces are initially placed, your teeth are likely to be very sensitive. You may experience discomfort for up to 3 or 5 days, which is why we encourage you to eat soft foods during that time. Remember, the less pressure you put on your teeth, the less discomfort you will have.
You may also be thinking, “Okay, so what can I eat?” We would encourage you to avoid eating sticky, hard, crunchy or chewy snacks that can stick to your teeth.
Dr. Smith and team will tell you it’s crucial to regularly check your braces for bent or loose wires and brackets. In the event of a loose/broken wire or bracket, please call our office immediately to schedule an appointment for repair.
Lastly, in addition to visiting R Scott Smith Orthodontics during your orthodontic treatment for adjustments, you should visit your dentist for professional check-ups and teeth cleaning appointments about every six months, or as recommended by your dentist.
Questions? Please let us know below or on our Facebook page. You may also give us a call!

Halloween TIPS from the American Association of Orthodontists
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYLgoWCYE0lMbA6W2Cp09xyOp0XuBW-ZINLs8o82PyTP2A8ce_KCATt75D3HyLYf9f0vmw7zPCVq9SxsVOgrLLAHbxYfdqk7yJooIHu4JMQck_1zcoRRvINfB574jgG8V7nO2lZYnGqSoW/s320/Halloweenpumpkin.jpg)
Trick-or-treating safety guidelines:
• Young children should always be accompanied by an adult
• Carry a flashlight
• Wear a light-colored or reflective costume
• Choose face paint over masks for young ghosts and goblins
• Have an adult inspect all treats before the children dig in
To protect your braces, steer clear of the following Halloween treats, or recipes with these ingredients:
• All hard candies
• All chewy candies
• Caramel
• Nuts
• Licorice
• Taffy
• Jelly beans
• Hard pretzels
• Bubblegum
• Popcorn (including unpopped kernels)
• Ice
Of course, Halloween does not have to be completely treat-less. Braces-friendly Halloween treats can help you enjoy the “spook-ta-cular” holiday. For example, plain chocolate candy is okay, provided you remember to brush and floss afterwards. Bobbing for apples as well as caramel apples are not recommended. However, you can enjoy thinly sliced apples, dipped in yogurt or creamy chocolate sauce.
Dr. Smith suggest(s) looking for foods that are soft, such as soft chocolate that can melt in one’s mouth or peanut butter cups. Overall, candies that aren’t sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy are generally acceptable.
HAPPY HALLOWEEN from the entire team at R. Scott Smith Orthodontics!

From Dr. R. Scott Smith Orthodontics: The advantage of Invisalign Teen™
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcnTu54pGctln4FdITaXikWWLBiU6m8cwjFwa5B1UWB98vFmqfYEF2vohAnjWqgN8FIy87FvIz9bQQEwnJ-Qov0Se7ceZIp7TqiwRtEHwzuchSMy0l009QkuGKRpLPCkxnDvNJCgB_UmQR/s320/teen_kid.jpg)
So how does Invisalign Teen work, you ask? Much in the same fashion as Invisalign, but with a few added characteristics tailored specifically to teenagers’ lifestyles. For instance, Invisalign Teen is designed with “compliance indicators” that fade from dark to light during the two week period that particular tray is used and once it has faded teens know to change trays. Each aligner comes with up to six free individual replacement aligners in case the original aligner ends up lost or broken. Another big benefit for the patient!
The treatment period for Invisalign Teen varies from nine to 18 months. If your teen is considering orthodontic treatment, please call us or tell us on Facebook and we’ll answer your questions about Invisalign Teen.

The importance of retainers

If you recently completed treatment at R. Scott Smith Orthodontics, we’d like to congratulate you! Now that your braces have been removed, Dr. Scott Smith will provide—or has provided you—with retainers. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers, however, always provide that stabilization. They are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Wearing retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Smith is the best insurance that the treatment improvements last for a lifetime.
To learn more about the advantages of wearing retainers after your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Smith, please read this helpful article about retainers from KidsHealth or give us a call!

Breaking bad habits
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuemJY8ry76u5XERHB5b3ACj273ff0XqRX0yx0iI2-RQK0nKayQUD4CkqsHvh4s80lmX4a6tJdlyzZqIOqluapTEY1I8QEcYGp3ie-irp6fGK3tpuadzWTs1RDrQmsnnqq_CsXTMeSZiaG/s320/Braces_Asian_girl.jpg)
Start by brushing your teeth twice a day. Proper brushing techniques are an essential part of maintaining good oral health during your orthodontic treatment, as well as preventing gum disease. More care and time are needed to adequately brush your teeth when you are wearing braces. Brushing daily helps remove decay-causing plaque from tooth surfaces. Please consult Dr. Smith if you would like us to review brushing techniques with you or your child. The use of a mechanical toothbrush such as a Sonicare or Oral B can aid in removing plaque around braces. Flossing daily will also prevent plaque to build up between the teeth and prevent stains between your teeth. Research has shown the bacteria of gum disease has been linked to coronary artery disease, stroke, diabetes and memory loss. Lastly, we encourage you to throw away old toothbrushes and replace them every 2 or 3 months, or after an illness.
We hope this helps! If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact R. Scott Smith Orthodontics or ask your general dentist during your next scheduled visit! Or, ask us on Facebook!

Top ten tips for keeping your BRACES sparklin’ clean
1. One tooth at a time. When you brush, take time with each individual tooth – at least 10 seconds each – and pay careful attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces.
2. It’s all about the angles. Brush the tops of your teeth and braces with your brush angled down toward where they meet. Brush the bottoms of your teeth and braces with your brush angled up.
3. The tooth, the whole tooth, nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, it’s equally important to clean the inner surface of your teeth (tongue side) as well as the chewing surface. And be sure to clean along your gum line – a key spot for plaque buildup.
4. Step 1: eat, step 2: clean. While you’re in treatment, it’s important to brush after every meal. Bits of food can easily get caught between braces and teeth, and these food bits interact with bacteria in your mouth to cause decay. The longer food is in contact with your teeth, the greater opportunity for plaque to form. If you are eating somewhere that you can’t brush, thoroughly rinse your mouth with water.
5. Like a Boy Scout, always be prepared. The easiest way to be sure you can brush after every meal is to get in the habit of taking a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss with you wherever you go. Designate a special container just for your teeth-cleaning tools and keep it in your purse, backpack, or laptop case.
6. Remove the moving parts. If you have elastic bands or headgear, remove these parts before you brush or floss.
7. Fluoride is your friend. Fluoride helps prevent cavities. Be sure to brush with fluoride toothpaste, and rinse with fluoride mouthwash.
8. Pointy brushes reach tiny places. Interproximal brushes (sometimes called proxa brushes or interdental brushes) are cone-shaped and come in very handy for reaching spots around your braces that standard brushes can’t.
9. Find the floss for you. Regular floss works for some patients, but others find it easier to work with a floss threader, which helps you get the floss into tight places. Other patients like an all-in-one product called Superfloss, which comes with a stiff end for easy threading, a spongy section for cleaning wide spaces, and regular floss for narrow spaces.
10. Make time for the pros. It’s your job to take care of the everyday cleaning. But make sure to visit your dentist regularly while in treatment, to get the deep, thorough cleaning that only a professional can provide. If you need help finding the right Dentist for you, feel free to contact our office - we’d love to help!
Hope this helps!

All the cool kids do it!

The study, conducted on behalf of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists for February’s National Children’s Dental Health Month, found 86 percent of moms reporting that braces are cooler today than when they were children. Sixty-nine percent of moms also said wearing braces makes their children feel cool, and 81 percent reported their children’s experience with orthodontic treatment as either positive or extremely positive.
Different color options and the ability to change colors, for example, provide exciting ways for young patients to customize appearances. That enthusiasm helps them to feel good about their orthodontic treatment with Dr. Scott Smith, and may contribute to the success of treatment.

Five reasons to schedule a summer consultation at R. Scott Smith Orthodontics
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWXwA3XFL9DE1wU-JQa11W1ry9aOvs8VuUEzOyPWPsjtmy8-q7Rg9I4TtxdM4Of_tRAFDDYiNTQl6cenaov8orOUMfPWAhwJ7-e_ZIBrPzkNiSLse90gJNH_IyQEY9JK9iA9EFXBhVukMa/s320/teenplayingmusic.jpg)
Here are our top five reasons why summer is the ideal time to schedule an orthodontic consultation:
#1 School is out - no need to miss school for your appointment
#2 It's easier to take time off from work during the summer. Often work schedules are more relaxed.
#3 Summer Hours - we start seeing patients at 7:00am during the summer months. Get in early and still have your whole day ahead of you!
#4 As always, we have the most flexible payment plans. Start now and payments start in September.
#5 It's ALWAYS a good time to take care of your oral health.

How to keep your breath fresh, with R. Scott Smith Orthodontics
Drs. Scott Smith, your Springfield and South Hadley orthodontist, recognizea that many of our patients are concerned about bad breath, or halitosis. While some cases of bad breath are persistent (chronic bad breath), generally bad breath is transient, and can be prevented.
We recently came across this helpful video about bad breath and thought it was worth sharing with our patients. The video explains what might cause bad breath and some ways that it can be avoided. In most instances, bad breath can be prevented by practicing common oral hygiene techniques that you have probably heard us emphasize during a visit to R. Scott Smith Orthodontics, such as brushing and flossing daily. We encourage you to watch this video for additional tips on how to keep bad breath at bay. Enjoy!

Orthodontic Emergency Care with Dr. R. Scott Smith

You might be surprised to learn that you may be able to temporarily solve many problems yourself until you schedule an appointment with R Scott Smith Orthodontics.
.
The following solutions may help you relieve your discomfort:
Poking Wire: Using a pencil eraser, push the poking wire down or place wax on it to alleviate the discomfort.
Loose Bracket or Band: If your bracket or band is still attached to the wire, you should leave it in place and put wax on it. If the wire comes out entirely, wrap the bracket with a tissue.
Loose Wire: Using a tweezers, try to place your wire back into place. If doing this and using wax does not help, as a last resort use a small fingernail clipper to clip the wire behind the last tooth to which it is securely fastened. If your discomfort continues, place wax on it.
Loose Appliance: If your appliance is poking you, place wax on the offending part of your appliance.
Headgear Does Not Fit: Sometimes headgear discomfort is caused by not wearing the headgear as instructed by your orthodontist. Please refer to the instructions provided by your orthodontist. If the facebow is bent, please call our office for assistance. Surprisingly, headgear becomes more comfortable the more it's worn, so be sure you’re getting in the prescribed hours.
General Soreness: When you get your braces on, you may feel general soreness in your mouth and teeth may be tender to biting pressures for three to five days. This can be relieved by rinsing your mouth with a warm salt water mouthwash. Dissolve one teaspoonful of salt in 8 ounces of warm water, and rinse your mouth vigorously. If the tenderness is severe, take aspirin or whatever you normally take for headache or similar pain.
Remember, after alleviating your discomfort, it is still very important that you call our office as soon as possible to schedule a time to repair the problem.

Recently we found a very interesting study about social media that was presented on May 25, 2011 by Edison Research and Arbitron that presents some very interesting statistics about social media use in America today. One fascinating highlight is that approximately 46 million Americans who are the age of 12 or older check their social media sites and services several times a day. Check out the full study for more interesting information about social media and social networking.
As you might have noticed, we love engaging in conversation with our patients online. It’s a great way to connect with our patients. It also helps us share news, photos, ideas, and upcoming events at the office. We have found that our Facebook fan page and blog are great tools for making this connection.
Dr. Smith and our team want to continue to improve our social networking presence. Let us know how you would like us to be using our social media or what you would like to see posted on the blog.
Happy Social Media Day!

Smile! June is National Smile Month!
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi370Q-EdGn9X2HoPhzHVIPgGc_k54jbH2B4h32V2NVFkk8kWiC8ViyVHzFFQwvY7s4Y-pQ4o7qdp0w-f8KEAlDnNQdYXZXs3D6gl3WP10J1MUOopYpTNdgnTzxMHXR3z4H7_mtXdA6xYGl/s320/girl_smile.jpg)
When you are packing for that summer vacation, remember to include wax and sugarless chewing gum so you can handle those "braces emergencies." A long wire can be pretty annoying. Put a pinch of wax or some softened sugarless gum over the end of the wire to get you through until you can come in to see us.
Here are a few simple steps you can take to improve your oral health so that you may celebrate National Smile Month for many, many years to come:
* Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Here's a helpful video showing you how to brush with your braces on.
* Floss every day to clean between your teeth.
* Reduce your intake of sugary foods and drinks during your orthodontic treatment with Dr. Smith.
* Visit your dentist regularly (usually every six months apart).
If you have questions about any of these tips, we encourage you to give us a call.

How can I help prevent my teeth from becoming chipped or broken while I play sports this summer?
The best way to protect your smile is by wearing a mouthguard. If you do not have braces on, we can take an impression and make you a custom-fit mouthguard in your choice of colors. Dr. Smith does not charge for this valuable service, because he believes that everyone should wear a mouthguard when playing sports, and cost should not stand in the way.
If I’m hit in the mouth, and a tooth gets knocked out, what can/should I do? What should I do if I am injured on a weekend when the office is closed?
If you should receive a sports injury to your smile, call one of our offices. Follow the emergency prompt and you will be connected to Lynn, our practice manager.
3. Are sports drinks bad for my teeth? What can I drink to stay hydrated and keep my teeth healthy?
Most sports drinks contain sugar. Water is a great alternative. If you do drink sugary sports drinks, do it in moderation, and remember to brush your teeth afterward.
If I wear Invisalign aligners, will they help protect my teeth, or do I still need to wear a mouth guard?
Wear your Invisalign when you play sports but you should also wear a "brace friendly" mouthguard.
Can I still wear a mouth guard with braces?
We will give you a "braces friendly" mouthguard to wear over your braces.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has provided these public health guidelines for your convenience. The guidelines call for children and teens to exercise for at least one hour each day of moderate intensity physical activity (such as playing sports or brisk walking) or one hour and 15 minutes of vigorous activity (jogging, dancing and jumping rope).
At R Scott Smith Orthodontics, we always encourage our patients to stay fit by exercising or participating in sports. However, we want to remind you to always wear a mouth guard or other forms of facial protection when playing sports. To learn more about how often your child should exercise, we recommend you check out this series of helpful articles about kids and exercise, courtesy of our friends at KidsHealth.org.

Can Braces Work for Adults?
People of all ages can benefit from orthodontic treatment with Dr. Smith and Dr. Raney. The physical process for moving teeth is the same, young or old, which means it’s never too late to address issues such as an overbite or underbite, crooked or crowded teeth, or jaw disorders.
How Do I Get Started?
If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, we’ll make a consultation appointment with you. During this meeting we will perform a general assessment of your oral health, discuss options for treatment, and answer any questions you may have. We will also discuss matters of cost and insurance. The next step is an orthodontic records appointment in which we take x-rays, photos, and an impression of your teeth. This information drives your unique treatment plan.
What Are the Benefits?
Straightening your teeth can improve your smile, your self-esteem, and your dental health. Technologically advanced new treatments make it easier to identify the option that best fits your lifestyle. Modern techniques and materials have made braces and aligners more effective, comfortable and unobtrusive than ever.
If you think you might benefit from orthodontic treatment, give R Scott Smith Orthodontics a call, so we may set up a consultation to determine what type of treatment best meets your needs. We always offer a "parent discount" and we will work with our adult patients to create an affordable payment plan.

Five tips to avoid plaque, from Dr. Smith and Dr. Raney
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDYudVCG7Un4Qupn8LMOm4sDt6dtsi2GZI_NL8KN-5rUwchraK086KU000Obbiswl0k5TNyEoGBaiuQffhcpCbS6b3H9qHr82-uJZekJqPt_qjDVkr20P2-MMBwZEpP-93JGg_dxyNkfch/s320/smiling_girlsweater.jpg)
Let’s start with not brushing regularly. Brushing your teeth twice a day with a fluoride-containing toothpaste is vital to a healthy mouth. Make sure you softly brush all the surfaces of your teeth.
Next on the list is not flossing daily: a simple daily flossing between teeth and braces clears away plaque before it can cause damage and can also clean plaque at the gum line. Please let us know if you need any tips for flossing with braces!
Dr. R. Scott Smith and Dr. Jason Raney recommend that you visit your dentist every 6 months (or as recommended) for regular checkups. Let’s say you brush and floss daily. You’re still at risk for plaque. With time, the plaque hardens and turns into tartar. If you visit your dentist at least twice a year (in addition to visiting R. Scott Smith Orthodontics) you will have a lower chance of getting cavities or losing your teeth.
You’ll also want to stop avoiding those fruits and veggies. Believe it or not, there are foods out there that play a key role in keeping plaque off our teeth.
Finally, before you pick that candy up, remember to not give in to your sweet tooth. Consuming sugary drinks or eating candy or other junk food allows sugar to stick to our teeth. The bacteria, then, becomes plaque, which turns into acid and damages our teeth. Avoiding these five bad habits keeps your plaque in check and will help ensure the success of your orthodontic treatment. If you have any questions, please give us a call or schedule an appointment!

Here are a few ways to ensure your mouth’s safety this spring, courtesy of our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists:
1. Wear mouth guards for contact sports such as baseball, softball, soccer and lacrosse.
2. Wear a helmet
3. Wear protective eyewear
4. Wear a face shield to avoid scratched or bruised skin
5. Be alert, even as a spectator
We hope that helps. Protective gear is vital for anyone engaging in tooth or mouth-threatening activities. If you have any further questions about any of these tips, please contact R. Scott Smith Orthodontics. Stay safe and have fun!

Well, 44 percent of folks out there are choosing teeth! In addition, the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, or AACD, conducted a study and found that 99.7 percent of those polled believed a smile is an important social asset. Now that I have braces, what can I eat?
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc8ZhEZvUev2AXYikjze-UQJgpNsoUhybcvFqPBZ2G9Jd5OQApqwbp0XwdMPP_bXnQyP42ChtFQ9j-hczTVYxcSEt0uOZPZhKkkwzbN-cr1JMasI2mTLekVyYYRpA1S-r-EVtskyF4cGRo/s320/waffles_2.jpg)
Luckily, there was someone else wondering the same thing when she first got braces! Brenda Waterman, 13, decided she was going to find a way to have her cake and eat it too, so she created a variety of “braces-friendly” recipes that allow you to enjoy your favorite treats without interfering with your orthodontic care! Her cookbook, “The Braces Cookbook: Recipes you (and your Orthodontist) will Love,” gives patients a variety of delicious recipes, safe to eat with braces; plus additional tips and advice for packing lunches, what to eat at parties, and braces-friendly restaurant dishes! There’s even a section with tips for dealing with the soreness that can occur when your braces or appliance are adjusted. Enjoy the foods you love – even with braces!
Here is a delicious, sneak peek recipe from “The Braces Cookbook:”
Wonderful Waffles
Forget the recipe that came with your waffle iron – this recipe will redefine fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth goodness. The secret to delicious waffles is letting the batter "sit" for five minutes before pouring into the waffle iron. Top cooked waffles with syrup, jam, fresh fruit or even whip cream. Makes about 5 servings!
Preheat your waffle iron according to the directions. You may want to lightly spray it with vegetable oil before heating.
• 3 cups flour
• 2 Tbl + 2 tsp baking powder
• 1 tsp salt
• 2 Tbl sugar
• 4 cups milk
• 4 eggs
• 1/2 cup vegetable oil
In a large bowl, whisk (or use electric mixer on low) together all ingredients. Let batter sit for about five minutes to activate the baking powder.
When waffle iron is ready, pour about 1/3 cup of batter onto each of the four squares (experiment with your iron – you don't want the batter overflowing). Gently close the cover and set your timer as the manufacturer suggests. Do not lift the cover while they bake. When done, carefully lift one edge with a flat spatula and pull the waffle away from the iron. Keep waffles warm on a plate under a clean dishtowel while the others bake.
Enjoy!

Foods to Avoid During Your Orthodontic Treatment
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbVCiTWsKjZ9Eldi74v9gz7itYuy6Tlj6H6WbG9C6emhK_PcnS3rxxPySOxgkm8O5cSXcPgnTyLDIhoXu7MnwANSSs6HMgZtq3VUUtKKpZ5L8BXu6A0emqICZw9-Rl_NfvxUfZTTgbGiTj/s320/salad+March.png)
Avoid tough meats, hard breads and raw vegetables such as carrots and celery. Before long, you'll be able to bite a cucumber again. But you'll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you're wearing braces.
Foods you should avoid include:
• Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
• Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice, chips
• Sticky foods: caramels, gum
• Hard foods: nuts, candy
• Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots
Also, chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.
If you have any questions on which foods you should be avoiding and why, we invite you to give us a call or ask our staff during your next visit.

Talkin' retainers with Dr. Smith and Dr. Raney
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmBeCk-AdKr7kB6035rNLFJnsmbtnFe0bfjFOtB4nt8EyjUQ6CGCp-G541upG6Ouem6ci-nKqfM5n4GuiRLWQ-Tkx0d0fLxNmyIrf-G8jEloQcEug8o3QZmTYJx7RvOikWG7R1v3tp4XMs/s320/retainer_3.jpg)
* Wear your retainers full time, until the doctor instructs otherwise. Wearing your retainers at night ensures that your pearly whites won’t relapse.
* Take your retainers out when eating...and always put retainers in their case! (Most appliances are lost in school lunch rooms or restaurants.)
* Clean retainers thoroughly once a day with a toothbrush and only a small amount of toothpaste. Use warm but not hot water.
* When retainers are not in your mouth they should ALWAYS be in a retainer case.
* Retainers are breakable, so treat them with care. If retainers are lost or broken, give us a call immediately.
* Remove retainers when swimming or during any sporting activity in which the retainers could fall out and get broken or lost (cheerleading, basketball, etc.) or when you should be wearing a mouth guard (football, soccer, etc.).
We hope this helps! You can always contact our team if you have any questions!

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month
![](https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMvRbsPQYUyIwFnKEZz9ten68fkZYmHOce9BRR-FfccTUuxBH2DNcSiykKkMByChl1POFIeMpB0vPCVBcq3dZ5EODdqHiQDIO0JRLpyDmkYj3Q6PN8dxLWb-7DFYF3J-v4SZ0dp4xfrIuS/s320/girls_braces.jpg)
• Teeth brushing techniques: It takes only two minutes to properly brush, using short, gentle strokes and devoting extra attention to the gumline, areas around fillings and hard-to-reach areas such as the back teeth.
• Flossing: hold the floss snugly between thumbs and index finger and place between each of the teeth, making sure to go beneath the gumline and curving the floss around the base of each tooth.
• Snack wisely: choose healthy snacks such as vegetables, fruits and cheese and avoid sticky, chewy candies that can stick to the teeth. If you eat these snacks, make sure to brush after doing so.
• Carbonated or sugary drinks: these beverages create acids that can damage the teeth when mixed with saliva, so they should be avoided altogether. When drinking one of these beverages, avoid sipping on it throughout the day. Rather, have a drink and then brush your teeth.
• Regular dental visits: in addition to seeing Dr. R. Scott Smith and Dr. Jason Raney, you should visit your dentist regularly (approximately every six months).
National Children's Dental Health Month, now in its 61st year, aims to increase awareness about the importance of kids' oral health. If you have any questions about keeping your mouth healthy, or about your treatment at R. Scott Smith Orthodontics, please feel free to give us a call!

Would you like to learn more about what to expect during orthodontic treatment, from someone with firsthand experience? Well, our friends at the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recently developed the Braces Brigade blog, where past, present, as well as future orthodontic patients from coast to coast document their (or their child’s) orthodontic journeys. The blog will serve as a source of guidance for others as the patients undergo orthodontic care.
Our team at R Scott Smith Orthodontics encourages you to visit the Braces Brigade blog to read these great and informative blogs—who knows, maybe you’ll learn a thing or two! As always, don’t hesitate to give us a call if you have any questions about the Braces Brigade or your own orthodontic treatment with Dr. Smith and Dr. Raney!
